FAQs
What is the typical course load in MAAS?
A full course load is 9 credits (3 courses) per semester, plus 6 credits of instructional Arabic if needed to pass the MAAS Arabic proficiency exam. Graduate courses typically meet once per week in the afternoon or evening; instructional Arabic courses meet every day and are required for those who have not passed the exam. Students proficient in Arabic upon entry to the program may complete the program in 3 semesters by taking 12 credits per semester. The program can also accommodate part-time students taking fewer than 9 graduate credits per semester.
Do you already need to know Arabic to gain acceptance into MAAS?
No. While two years of prior Arabic study are recommended, students with limited Arabic are welcome to apply.
What does the admissions committee look for in an applicant?
The MAAS program welcomes applicants who have some background in the region and in their proposed concentration. Though not required, prior knowledge of Arabic and appropriate work or life experience in the region are helpful. Successful MAAS candidates have strong analytic capabilities, an excellent academic record, and a commitment to a future career related to the region.
What are the average or minimum GPA requirements?
Our average GPA for admitted students is about a 3.8. The minimum GPA for admission is 3.0.
Is the GRE required?
The GRE is no longer required for MAAS applicants.
Do you conduct admission interviews?
The admissions committee does not conduct interviews. However, applicants are welcome to visit the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies and meet with students, faculty, and the academic coordinator to discuss the program and admissions.
Do you have spring admissions?
No, MAAS only admits students for the fall semester. The deadline is January 15th for those being considered for scholarship aid. The final deadline for all applicants is April 1st.
What are the scholarship opportunities available?
The MAAS program strives to attract the most competitive students. As such, we offer full-tuition scholarships and limited living stipends. Students who apply by January 15th are given priority consideration for scholarships and stipends. Approximately 1/3 of incoming students are awarded a full-tuition scholarship. Scholarships are for one year only but are renewable for the second year of study. Students admitted without funding are encouraged to apply for assistance for their second year. The MAAS program seeks to reward outstanding academic achievement of students and awards more funding to second year students than incoming students. Over two-thirds of the MAAS students receive some funding during their two years in the program.
