Mohannad Shamy
Class of 2027
Mohannad graduated from Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University with a bachelor’s degree in political science and international relations. He took part in the Syrian uprising and was involved in several civil society initiatives. He has over six years of experience working on research related to Syria. He has contributed to prominent projects such as the Syrian Memory Project at the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies and the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED), where he specialized in analyzing and mapping political violence, as well as managing disaggregated, geo-referenced datasets.
His academic and professional pursuits are driven by a desire to contribute to a deeper understanding of Syria’s complex social and political realities. He is particularly interested in post-war reconstruction, urban governance, and the legacies of authoritarianism. At MAAS, Mohannad plans to explore how urban spaces influence conflict dynamics and shape social relations in the context of reconstruction. He aims to engage critically with socio-spatial transformations, policy design, and development strategies, with a view toward fostering inclusive, sustainable post-conflict recovery in Syria.
