Title: CCAS Education Outreach Coordinator wins President’s Excellence Award

The Center for Contemporary Arab studies is pleased to announce that CCAS Education Outreach Coordinator Dr. Susan Douglass is a 2017 recipient of the President’s Excellence Award for Staff at Georgetown University.

The President’ Excellence Award seeks to recognize distinguished staff members who have gone above and beyond in their work and have made significant contributions to the University that have enhanced the quality of life on our campuses in substantial and lasting ways. In the words of Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia, the honorees “bring to our University an exceptional level of commitment that helps to deepen and strengthen the ethos of care, compassion, excellence, and engagement that characterizes our way of life here at Georgetown.”

Dr. Douglass has been honored for her outstanding, innovative, and tireless work in the field of K-14 educational outreach. As Education Outreach Coordinator at CCAS, part of the Georgetown University National Resource Center on the Middle East and North Africa (funded by the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant), Dr. Douglass designs and administers educational workshops for K-14 teachers on subjects related to the histories, religions, cultures, politics, arts, and economics of the Middle East. She has been honored specifically for her innovative conception of new projects based on her knowledge of teacher needs, and due to her effective collaborations with other institutions and scholars within and beyond the university, including DC Public Schools, the Smithsonian, and experts from around the globe. In 2016-2017 alone, Dr. Douglass designed, organized, and mounted 11 workshops in and around Washington DC that reached 789 individuals.

“Susan mobilizes Georgetown’s intellectual resources to benefit others, particularly public-school teachers and students, community colleges, and other public and private service providers,” says CCAS Director Rochelle Davis. “Since Susan joined CCAS, she has enhanced the academic and intellectual substance of our K-12 education outreach program and raised the local and national profile of Georgetown University.”
