Keep Eyes on Sudan: 2024-2025 Event Series
Sudan continues to be the epicenter for one of the world’s most significant conflicts more than a year on from the start of the war, with little talk of negotiated settlement and regional and global partners playing no role in facilitating an end to the war. More than a quarter of Sudan’s population has now been displaced, a total of around 12 million people, with at least 2 million of those becoming refugees. More than 18 million Sudanese have significant humanitarian needs, including 3 million facing famine. There is a lack of basic health care and a very real threat of genocide in the Darfur region. Women and girls have faced very high levels of sexual violence in this confict.
This year-long collaboration of the Georgetown African Studies Program (AfS), the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies (CCAS), the Georgetown Conflict Resolution Program, the Gender+ Justice Initiative, and the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security (GIWPS) seeks to put a spotlight on the causes, consequences and responses of the conflict in Sudan for the Sudanese people and their neighbors. Even as there are many events that draw media and news attention, Sudan remains crucial to the region and the world, and in its own right. Through a series of events featuring Sudanese and Sudan scholars and Sudanese activists, as well as film and other media, we will share with the Georgetown and larger DC community the beauty, dynamism and strength of the Sudanese people, but also the very real threats they are facing and how Sudanese are responding. We will also focus on the geopolitics of this conflict, the long history of foreign engagements that have been destructive to Sudan and highlight possible pathways to peace.
