Nemir Kirdar’s recent book, Saving Iraq (Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 2010), reviews the country’s history and maps a course for its restoration. Based on his own experiences growing up in Iraq, Mr. Kirdar recounts a time before the 1958 coup when “the country was able to rise above the diverse composition of its population, achieve unity under the rule of law, ensure quality and meritocracy, and strive for economic prosperity.”
Mr. Kirdar then calls on the new generation of Iraqis to work together to create a country, based on unity and secularity, that is “a beacon of democracy, stability and prosperity.”
