Ahlan wa-sahlan!

Librarian note from August 26, 2004

Ahlan wa-sahlan! Welcome to news about Lauinger Library’s resources on and from the Arab world and the Middle East! I will be adding information about new features frequently, so stay tuned…

Here are some basics:

You can access information about the library’s holdings in GEORGE (the Georgetown University library catalog) and other library resources from the library’s homepage at www.library.georgetown.edu.

To view the Guide to Research: Middle Eastern Area Studies, click on: http://www.library.georgetown.edu/guides/mideaststudies for a list of the library’s most significant reference works, hints on searching Arabic in the library catalog, etc.

For the latest news about events and resources in the library, go to News from the Main Campus Libraries: http://www.library.georgetown.edu/dept/admin/librarynews/current.htm.

Want to create documents in Arabic or view Arabic Internet sites created in text (not graphical) formats? Use the 12 workstations in the Picchi Multimedia Lab (located in the Gelardin New Media Center, 1st floor Lauinger; for a map, click on http://www.library.georgetown.edu/dept/gelardin/location.htm); these are available on a “first come, first serve” basis. For reasons having to do with other software, these are the only library computers set to handle Arabic script.

New feature: Monthly New Materials Lists http://www.library.georgetown.edu/newmaterials where you can see all new materials (in all languages) cataloged in the past month. It’s advisable to use the “LC [Library of Congress] call number order” as the topical groupings are very broad. [Hint: Islam: BP; Middle Eastern/North African history: DR, DS, DT; Arabic language, linguistics & literature: PJ]

Questions about using the library or about finding materials in GEORGE? Feel free to contact me.

cheers, Brenda
