Yvonne Y. Haddad, Professor of the History of Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations at the Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown University, recently co-edited a book entitled Educating the Muslims of America, published in 2009 by Oxford University Press. The book compiles papers looking at the challenges facing Muslim-Americans as they seek well-rounded religious education from adolescence to adulthood as well as articles on such topics as the kinds of training offered by Muslim chaplains in U.S. institutions and how Muslims are educating Americans in the face of hostility and prejudice.
The Center for Contemporary Arab Studies was one of several organizations to provide funding for the book. Among the contributing writers are Susan L. Douglass, a 1993 MAAS grad, and Nadia Inji Khan, who graduated from Georgetown in 2008 with degrees in Arabic and studio art. The other two editors of Educating the Muslims of America are Farid Senzai, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Santa Clara University, and Jane I. Smith, Associate Dean for Faculty and Academic Affairs at Harvard Divinity School.
