CCAS Announces its New Occasional Paper on Education, Human Development, and Arab Women

By Mimi Kirk

CCAS is pleased to announce its latest Occasional Paper, entitled "Education, Human Development, and Arab Women: Progress, Dilemmas, and American Discourse," by Dr. Fida Adely. Dr. Adely is an assistant professor at the Center and the first holder of the Clovis and Hala Salaam Maksoud Chair in Arab Studies. Her paper addresses the links that have been drawn between education and human development as freedom or the expansion of choices, and it then considers the increase in formal education in the Arab world and what that means for women. Dr. Adely relates this discussion to American discourse on the subject of Arab women, and the implications of its continued politicization and misrepresentation of women's status for development efforts.
