Originally from San Diego, CA, Matt graduated from Yale University with a BA in religious studies in 1999. He then attended Teachers College at Columbia University and taught high school social studies for eight years in Brooklyn, NY. After September 11, 2001, Matt developed an elective course in modern Middle Eastern history, which he taught for several years. Matt has traveled throughout the Middle East, but his primary interest is the history and society of the Arabian Gulf. In 2006-2007 Matt was a Fulbright student in the United Arab Emirates, where he worked at Zayed University and studied the Khaleeji dialect of Arabic in Oman and the UAE. He earned an MA in history from CUNY-Brooklyn College, where he wrote his thesis on “U.S. Foreign Policy and State Development in the Lower Gulf, 1968-1979.”
