After graduating summa cum laude from the University of Alabama with a dual degree in political science and economics, Ava moved to Cairo and interned with the Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram Weekly. Six months later, she began an NSEP Boren Fellowship in Jerusalem and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, where she studied at the Hebrew University and researched Palestinian non-violent resistance. Training young Palestinians in the methods and philosophies of civil disobedience helped pique her interest in civil society, and in particular highlighted the role of youth in economic, social, and political development. She further pursued these issues as a 2007 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar to Amman, Jordan, where she worked as a researcher at the Center for Strategic Studies. While at CCAS, Ava will concentrate her studies on civil society and development in Arab states.
