Originally from Lake Forest, Illinois, Sam graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2008 with a degree in history and international studies.  He completed his undergraduate thesis on Jordanian school textbooks, national identity, and political upheaval during the 1950s.  He has been fortunate to study in Jordan, Egypt, and Oman as well as travel in Syria and Israel/Palestine.  Interested in national identity and state formation in the Sham, he hopes to continue to explore these ideas while teaching at the college level in the future.  His other interests include fiction and North Carolina Tar Heels basketball.
