Ramsen Betfarhad (1989) writes: “I am now at the White House as an advisor to Vice President Cheney (Deputy Assistant to the Vice President for Domestic Policy) AND most important we just had a baby daughter, Christiane Marina Betfarhad.”
Khaled Elgindy (1994) has been in Ramallah working as a policy advisor for the Negotiations Support Unit of the Adam Smith Institute since January 2004. He writes: “In late May, I married Nabila Assaf, a native of Arrabeh, Palestine (though we actually met in DC).”
Michelle Miller (1995) and Peter Hammond welcomed Cordelia Iris Hammond in May. “We all are doing well and learning new things every day. I returned to work in early August, and though it has been difficult, IBM is good about fl ex time—they pride themselves on being a good place for working mothers.”
Julian L. Wilcox, born to Sheila and Oliver Wilcox (1996) in May, is “a happy, healthy baby who generally sleeps through muchof the night. This makes his parents happy and healthy too!” After a generous and flexible paternity leave over the summer, Oliver is back at work (USAID) now about 75% time and getting his dissertation back on track (UVA, Political Science).
Doug Black (1997) and Amanda McClean celebrated the late-August arrival of Fiona McClean Black, who, in Doug’s “completely unbiased opinion, is adorably cute. Amanda is doing well too—everyone came through the birth fine.”
Mary Beth Jacobs Hartenstine (1997) moved from Salt Lake City to Bellingham, Washington in late August. “My husband accepted a tenure-track position at West-
ern Washington University, so it seems that is where we will be settling at least
semi-permanently.”
From Otavio Peixoto (1997): “I have finally moved to a charming abode in
world-famous, sun-drenched Copacabana Beach, where I am closer to those ritzy
hotels where I usually act as conference interpreter at international events. In keeping with the mounting volume of work in Spanish as a result of the growth of Mercosur, I am planning a 45-day immersion course in Chile from mid-December till late January 2005, where I intend to take up classes in wine tasting and get some practice sliding down the slopes of the majestic Andes while honing my skills in spoken ‘espaol,’ noblesse oblige.”
Dana Hearn (1999): “I was in Thailand for much of last year and in Egypt this February through late April. It seems as if a few MAASers are hanging about in Umm Al-Dunya these days...I spent a lot of time with Hanan Kholoussy and also ran into Aryah Sommers and Sherry Youssef” (1999).
Sherry Youssef (1999) writes from Egypt, where she is working with General Dy-
namics on a USAID Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Project helping Egypt increase its ICT awareness and usage. She, too, recently got
married—to Mr. Omar Younes of Egypt.
Corinne Quinones (2005) married Brad Shaffer in mid-August at a small civil cer-
emony in Los Angeles, CA. Kathleen Ridolfo (LOA) married Diar Bamrni in September, in Prague, Czech Republic, where both have been working on the staff of Radio Free Iraq/Radio Liberty.
