John Ruedy published the second edition of his book Modern Algeria: The Origins and Development of a Nation in July 2005 (Indiana University Press). The book is a history of Algeria from Ottoman and colonial times to the present. The first edition concluded with the military coup of 1992 that voided parliamentary elections Islamists had just won. The current edition explores in greater depth the roots of Algerian Islamism, the insurgency that plagued Algeria through the 1990’s and major political, economic and cultural changes that took place through 2004.
