Karin Ryding has been invited to serve on a steering committee to establish an “Arabic Language Village” at the Concordia College summer language camp, in Minnesota. The Concordia program has been in existence many years, providing intensive immersion training for high school students in a range of foreign languages. They are finally adding Arabic to their offerings. She has also been invited to serve on the Modern Language Association’s Ad Hoc Committee on Foreign Languages, dealing with post-9/11 issues in foreign language teaching and research. She chaired a panel to honor Mahmoud Al-Batal’s achievements in the field of Arabic language teaching and applied linguistics, at the Modern Language Association's annual meeting in Philadelphia on December 28, 2004. Dr. Ryding also spearheaded a winning proposal to launch a Center for Advanced Proficiency in Arabic to be based in Georgetown beginning summer 2005.
