Tarik Yousef continued his active schedule of research, lecturing and policy advising activities on current development challenges facing the Arab world, especially in the areas of growth, employment and poverty reduction. On May 24, he gave a keynote address on labor market policies at the Human Resource Development Forum of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. On June 15, he presented the recently completed World Bank-sponsored “Employment Report on the Middle East and North Africa” at an event co-sponsored with CCAS and Middle East Institute along with the World Bank. On June 16, he gave a lecture on the links between youth, unemployment and conflict at the “Reaching Vulnerable Children and Youth in MENA” summit organized by the Middle East and North Africa Region of the World Bank. In July, he spoke at a conference organized by the London Middle East Institute on “Libya’s Future: Domestic, Regional and Global Contexts.” Dr. Yousef also spoke at the National Defense University in July and August, respectively, on the prospects for political reform in the Arab world and Libya’s integration into the world community.
Finally, Dr. Yousef made presentationsat a training workshop organized by the IMF and World Bank institutes on employment, education and growth in the Middle East. Starting in August, Dr. Yousef joined the Millennium Project of the UN, which is headed by Professor Jeffrey Sachs of Columbia University, as a senior advisor on Yemen following the country’s decision to prepare a long-term national strategy to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. During this assignment, Dr. Yousef will coordinate ongoing work by the UN Millennium Project, the Government of Yemen, the Yemen UN Country Teams, IMF, and World Bank in the preparation of a 10-year poverty reduction strategy.
