With Shiulie Gosh hosting, CCAS Director Dr. Michael Hudson recently appeared on the Al Jazeera English program Inside Story to discuss Israeli settlement construction in the West Bank. Raanan Gissen, former senior advisor to Ariel Sharon, and Azzam Tamimi, director of the Institute of Islamic Political Thought, joined him.
Dr. Hudson stressed that Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is taking advantage of President Obama having his hands full with domestic issues to stall concrete talks regarding settlements.
The settlement argument has become skewed, Dr. Hudson continued, and to reach a tangible agreement, the American president will have to significantly step up the pressure. Dr. Hudson noted that Obama could gain leverage by slowing down U.S. connections with Israel: “The best approach would…simply [be] to…slow down on [the] intelligence relationship, put some obstacles and delays into trade deals that may be forthcoming, be tepid on new aid for Israel instead of enthusiastic, and so on. It’s not easy.”
