Degree Requirements

The M.A. in Arab Studies degree requires completion of a minimum of 36 semester hours (12 three-credit hour classes) in addition to basic Arabic language courses. Those who choose the thesis option must complete 33 hours plus the thesis. The full-time student will usually complete requirements for the degree in four regular semesters and the intervening summer session, depending on his or her Arabic language competence.

Students in the joint degree programs are encouraged to consult the MAAS student handbook as well as the collaborating degree program for specifics requirements.

The base requirements for each student are as follows:

  1. Completion of 12 courses: roughly half the courses in the concentration block & half the courses in the supporting block
    1. Core Courses
    2. Concentration block courses
    3. Supporting block courses
  2. Passage of MAAS Oral and Written Arabic Proficiency Exam;
  3. MAAS Oral Comprehensive Exams or the Thesis Option.
