MAAS provides limited funding to students during the academic year and intervening summer session (for Arabic language study only). Each student who wishes to be considered for financial assistance from the MAAS program must submit a formal request to the MAAS program. Students who have previously received financial assistance from the MAAS program are NOT guaranteed automatic renewal and must submit the required request to be considered for renewed funding.
The major criteria which the committee considers in the awarding of funds are academic achievement and potential. MAAS students who wish to apply for renewal of scholarships or for first-time awards should therefore be aware that actual performance within the program is an important element in the committee's evaluation process. Students with incompletes risk not being considered for renewal or first-time awards.
Financial aid decisions for continuing students are made after spring semester grades have been received.
Continuing students wishing to be considered either for renewal or initial fellowships or scholarships should make a formal request in writing to the Chair of the Financial Aid Committee by April 30. The request should outline why the student feels he or she deserves financial aid and should be accompanied by one letter of support, directed to the Chair, from a professor who has taught the student at Georgetown. In addition to the letter of recommendation and statement, students should also submit an updated CV. Since funds are committed on an academic year basis, it is rarely possible to offer new or increased financial support at mid-year.
A separate committee, under a separate deadline, makes decisions about FLAS fellowship awards. These awards are not limited to MAAS students, and can go only to US citizens or permanent residents currently enrolled in a graduate program at Georgetown [or applying to a Georgetown graduate program] who is combining the study of the region with the study of Arabic, Hebrew, Persian or Turkish. The FLAS award is made once annually for both summer and academic year awards. Please see the NRC-ME website for the details, including the application.
MAAS students may apply to a number of smaller competitive awards during their two years (some of which are exclusive to Georgetown and/or may requiew the expressed recommendation of the MAAS program). Examples include: the Roback scholarship, Cosmos Club travel grants, Graduate School travel grants, the Harry Truman Good Neighbor Award for research travel, the Rosenthal fellowship, and the Willard G. Oxtoby Prize. Timely information about these awards will be emailed or posted in the student room.
In response to students' requests for additional funding for conference travel, language study and research expenses, the MAAS program has created an in-house, competitive grant fund for curent MAAS students. Grants will be awarded for registration fees for conferences, research-related expenses, language study, internship costs and travel expenses for the aforementioned endeavors. Acceptable use of funds includes support for travel connected with the performance of research and tuition and travel expenses related to Arabic language programs and conferences. As students' needs vary, requests for support for other related purposes will also be considered. Please note: the number and amount of awards are based on the amount of money available and are subject to change each year.
