The Nina Brekelmans Memorial Foundation was established in 2016 to foster athletic opportunities for young women in the Middle East by supporting running programs in Jordan to encourage healthy living, expand participation in the sport, and promote women’s empowerment. Our programs welcome girls ages eight to fourteen from a cross-section of Jordanian society to participate in an annual spring running camp—the Nina Brekelmans Running Camp for Girls—and capstone race—the Nina Brekelmans Race for Girls—at Al Hussein Public Parks in Amman, Jordan.

remembering nina

Nina Brekelmans was an exceptional Arabic scholar and dedicated distance runner who passed away in 2015 at age 25 in a Washington, DC apartment fire. She was intelligent, driven, committed to public service, globally minded, and a compassionate friend to all. Throughout her studies at Dartmouth and Georgetown, Nina developed a passion for Arabic and the Middle East. She received numerous prestigious Arabic grants and language scholarships and was poised to travel on a Fulbright scholarship to research the women’s running movement in Jordan prior to her death. The Foundation, camp, and race were started in 2016 to carry forth her vision, continue her legacy, and honor her memory.
